Meet the Plant Package - Blooming Bonsai

Hello 2020! The holidays are over, the cold has set in across most of the country, and resolutions have been made to honor the new year. The start of a new year is also a great time to try something new, which is why our January Plant Plant Package is all about the calming art of bonsai.

Bonsai literally translates to "plant grown in a pot," but the interpretation has evolved since its inception in ancient China. Today, we think of bonsai as tiny version of old, wooden trees. However, any tree or shrub with a wooden stem can be pruned into an informal bonsai. The two plants in Blooming Bonsai Plant Package are shrubs that are perfect for experimenting with.

Each Plant Package comes with four plants, in addition to soil, fertilizer and instructions for assembly and care. Meet the December plants below.

The Plants

Double Play® Candy Corn® Spirea

The details: This plant will wow you with the changes of color in its leaves. In earliest spring, new growth emerges bright candy apple red. As it matures, it turns pineapple yellow, and the new growth continues to emerge bright orange all season. Top it off with dark purple flowers in late spring/early summer, and you've got a display you really have to see to believe. Spirea does well as a bonsai - simply trim dead branches and top growth to encourage the main stems to grow outward.

Happy Face Hearts® Potentilla

The details: A resilient plant that will make you happy with pretty pink flowers in the spring. Happy Face will bloom from spring until fall, and if kept indoors in bonsai form, will provide you with greenery year round. Potentilla is a great plant to experiment with bonsai gardening - simply trim into one solid main stem and prune into a tree shape.

The Extras

This month's Plant Package comes with your choice of container option: the standard pot is a shallow, faux cast-iron option (pictured), while the premium container is a 12" distressed tin planter. As always, all three subscription options come with coconut coir discs, perlite, and fertilizer.

The January surprise add-on is a pair of bonsai pruning shears.
